How to photograph a signature cleanly

Background removal works best when paper and ink are visually distinct.

1

Use even lighting

Avoid shadows, glare and bright hotspots across the paper.

2

Keep the camera parallel

Photograph straight down to reduce perspective distortion.

3

Use dark ink

Black or dark blue ink provides stronger separation from paper.

4

Leave clean corners

Automatic sampling reads corner colors, so keep fingers and objects away.

Understanding the cleanup controls

Tolerance

Higher values remove a wider range of colors near the sampled paper color. Too high can erase pale ink.

Edge softness

Creates gradual transparency around ink edges. Increase it for smoother photos; reduce it for crisp scans.

Contrast

Strengthens or softens differences in retained ink pixels without changing their transparency.

Create a transparent signature in four steps

1

Upload locally

Choose a PNG, JPG or WebP signature photo.

2

Remove paper

Use automatic corner sampling or white-paper mode.

3

Refine

Adjust tolerance, softness, ink mode and contrast.

4

Export

Crop, pad and download the transparent PNG.

Frequently asked questions

Does my signature image leave my device?

No. The image is decoded, processed and exported entirely inside your browser.

Why does automatic mode sample the corners?

Photo corners often contain clean paper, allowing the tool to estimate cream, gray or colored backgrounds more accurately than assuming white.

Why are light parts of the signature disappearing?

Lower Removal tolerance. If edges still look too faint, reduce Edge softness as well.

Does 2× output create more real detail?

No. It interpolates the processed image to larger dimensions; it cannot recover detail missing from the source photo.

Is the PNG a certificate-based digital signature?

No. It is a transparent image asset and does not verify identity or protect document integrity.
