PNG and JPG solve different problems

PDF pages can contain text, vectors, photographs and transparent artwork. The best format depends on what matters most after rendering.

PNG

Precise, lossless pages

  • Sharp text and interface screenshots
  • No generational compression artifacts
  • Optional transparency
  • Usually larger archives
JPG

Compact photographic pages

  • Good for scans and photo-heavy pages
  • Adjustable 50–100 quality
  • No transparency support
  • Can show artifacts around small text

Which DPI should you use?

72–96DPI

Preview and screen

Fast, compact output for thumbnails, previews and ordinary screen use.

200DPI

Detailed screen work

Better for zooming, archiving diagrams or extracting clearer page graphics.

300DPI

Print and close inspection

High-detail output with significantly greater processing and storage cost.

Frequently asked questions

Can PNG output have transparency?

Yes. Select Transparent where possible. White page backgrounds already drawn into the PDF remain white; transparency applies only where the PDF page has no opaque artwork.

Why is 300 DPI slower?

Doubling DPI approximately quadruples the pixel count. High DPI consumes much more memory, CPU time and storage.

What happens if a selected page does not exist?

The server returns a clear error rather than silently ignoring or changing the page number.

Can I convert an encrypted PDF?

Yes, when you provide its correct current open password.

Why can a very large conversion be rejected?

The server limits page count and estimated total pixels to prevent memory exhaustion. Reduce DPI or select fewer pages and try again.
