How to Read Your Electricity Meter
Most homes have a digital or analogue dial meter measured in kWh. To calculate your consumption over a period, note the reading at the start and end of the period and subtract. Multiply the difference by your tariff rate to get the cost. Smart meters display real-time usage and can be read remotely by your utility provider.

Your electricity bill is calculated by multiplying each appliance's power (watts) by daily usage hours to get watt-hours, dividing by 1,000 to convert to kWh, then multiplying by the number of days and your tariff rate per kWh. Formula: Cost = (Watts ÷ 1,000) × Hours/day × Days × Rate. Fixed charges, taxes and subsidies are added on top by the utility.
Air conditioners are typically the biggest electricity consumers, followed by electric water heaters (geysers), refrigerators, washing machines and electric ovens. Lighting has become much less significant since the shift to LEDs. Pool pumps and EV chargers can also be major loads if present.
Switch all lighting to LEDs, use a programmable or smart thermostat for your AC, set your refrigerator to 3–4 °C and freezer to -18 °C, wash clothes in cold water, run dishwashers on eco mode, unplug chargers and devices when not in use, and consider a solar water heater. Improving roof and wall insulation reduces AC load considerably.
A kilowatt-hour (kWh) is the standard unit used for metering electrical energy. It equals the energy consumed when a 1 kW (1,000 W) load runs for exactly one hour. For example, a 100 W bulb running for 10 hours uses 1 kWh, and a 1,500 W air conditioner running for 1 hour also uses 1.5 kWh. Utilities charge a rate per kWh — typically between $0.10 and $0.40 depending on region.
