DPI, PPI and pixels explained

Pixels

The fixed digital dimensions that determine how much image detail exists.

PPI

Pixels per inch describes how densely image pixels are placed when printed.

DPI

Printer dots per inch is commonly used interchangeably with PPI in file workflows.

Print width in inches = pixel width ÷ DPI. For example, 3000 pixels at 300 DPI prints at 10 inches.

Frequently asked questions

Does changing 72 DPI to 300 DPI add quality?

No. With unchanged pixels, the intended print size becomes smaller and denser; no new image detail is created.

What DPI is best for printing?

300 DPI is a common high-quality target. Posters viewed from farther away may work well around 150 DPI.

Are my files retained?

No. The image is uploaded through an encrypted connection, processed temporarily and removed by the conversion workflow.
